What should I know about floods as a first responder?

Handling any natural disaster can be difficult as a first responder, but flood response is often especially challenging. There are some hazards you should be aware of before diving into disaster relief.

Floods often pose a risk of chemical or biological danger because floodwaters may be contaminated with bacteria, pathogens or other harmful substances.
If you're a first responder, you should be fully outfitted with waterproof PPE before responding to a flood.
You should also be up-to-date on all your vaccines before venturing out into potentially contaminated water.
